HowtoWikiProject

Page history last edited by Anonymous 4 yrs ago
    • Wiki is a powerful way to make webpages without having to know much about writing webpage code. Often it is used for collaborations in groups, it is also used by individuals for personal project pages. At Duxbury Middle and High School , it is used by many teachers to collaborate on classroom improvement and curriculum development. In the DHS Technology and Engineering department it is also being used to connect students who are working on group projects. Some of these projects are based on individual tools, such as the Numerically Controlled Mill and Wood Lathe , others are using it to help each other communicate on how to design and build a Ballista or mideval seige engine. Wiki is a way that all the contributors on a project can share their thoughts, ideas and opinions. The contributors on the project do not have to meet in person to share ideas. Some of the people working on these projects are in different classes, others are not even enrolled in Technology and Engineering classes this semester.

Recently, a new service became available through PBWiki.com, a website dedicated to making this easy to use web authoring tool even easier to use. The idea is that making a wiki can be as easy as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Once the wiki is made, you will need to learn a few markup tricks, such as how to change the size of the text, add bullets, make links and create new web pages. PBWiki is adding more features to the wikis over time. There is a link to there website on your pages.

To get started log onto the wiki that was created for you by your teacher. You will have a web address and a password that will allow you to see your pages. The pages are password protected to keep others from seeing or modifying them. As publishers of information, you will need to act responsively in your community.

    • Go to your FrontPage and read the information there PBWiki has placed a greeting on the page with some background on Wiki and the organization. At the bottom of the page are a couple of links. Follow the link to the SandBox and follow the instructions there Change the page, fool around with it, add some information, change some information, make things bold, italic, bulleted, bigger, smaller, basically test it out. You are not going to hand that page in, but you will need the experience from changing it. Don't take forever.

    • Return to your FrontPage 1 Remove the greeting from PBWiki. 2 Make a bulleted list of your classes from this semester. 3 Write a 5 sentence paragraph about what you plan on doing this summer. 4 Modify several individual words to make them bold and italic. 5 Make a link to a new page called NextYear. That page will be a place where you describe what you think you will do in the next 12 months. You will add to that page next class.

Print a copy of your FrontPage and hand it in before the end of the period.

    • If you have time remaining in the period, you can either work on your wiki, go to http://wikipedia.org/, or quietly do homework with the computer turned off.
